The departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union poses complex and difficult questions about its future relationship with the EU. Although becoming a ‘third country’, the UK will nevertheless remain a major economic and political partner, requiring careful and creative reflection on the future governance of this relationship. This panel brings together the President of the European Free Trade Association Court - Professor Carl Baudenbacher - with a leading academic commentator on Brexit - Professor Steve Peers of the University of Essex - to discuss the possibilities and limits of one of the principal models to have thus far animated the debate. Can the current arrangements surrounding the European Economic Area provide an effective means to address the dilemmas posed by the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with the EU?
