In 2003, I joined the newly-created University of Luxembourg (UL) – a multilingual and international higher education and research institution – as associate professor, where I covered since the domain of structural engineering related to concrete constructions.

Teaching:

When I started, as one of the few pioneering colleagues I had the opportunity – and the luck – to determine and to design the programmes and study rules within the limits of the provisions of the new law creating the UL. This experience allowed me to help shape engineering education and teaching within our institution, bringing in and building upon my previous experience in civil engineering education as well as my time in industry.

Following my participation in the curriculum design, I was officially designated the head of specialisation for degree tracks in Civil Engineering Construction (GCC), Civil Engineering Urban planning (GCU), and the tri-national construction management program in civil engineering in 2005 and since 2011, I have been the course director (i.e. programme director) of the “bachelor professional in engineering” (BING), the largest programme in the Faculty of Science Technology and Communication. Starting with 200 students in 2003 we have now about 300 students in 8 different tracks covering the fields of civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and energy and environment.

 

Research

Currently, I am the head of the research group for Solid Structures which is embedded in the Research Unit in Engineering Science (RUES) of the Faculty of Science, Technology and Communication (FSTC).

The objectives of the group are two-fold: (1) to have a solid research profile, around the topics structural health monitoring, structural analysis and dynamics, structural reliability and risk analysis, finite element analysis of concrete and steel-concrete composite structures, failure analysis for engineering materials and structures; which constitutes a perfect framework for (2)excellence in teaching. We have succeeded in:

  • producing a recognised contribution to identifying the influence of environmental changes as well as the influence of non-linear behaviour on the static and dynamic response of bridges,
  • developing a new design method for steel fibre-reinforced concrete flat slabs taking into account the real orientation factor for large elements,
  • developing and patenting a new modular masonry block system, and
  • identifying the rheological behaviourof self-compacting concrete depending on temperature,
    • as well as being the first to describe the shear stresses with the failure angle within a honeycomb core structure. Furthermore, I embarked on a challenging interdisciplinary project, joining mechanics and human prostheses, whose relevance for the community was confirmed by a prize.

Benefiting from my industrial background, having worked three years in industry as a research and development engineer, I have consolidated the group’s national and cross-border contacts with industry, administration and other sectorial stakeholders, such as ArcelorMittal, Cimalux, Chaux de Contern, Eifelhaus, Astron, Dupont de Nemours, Pont & Chaussés, Dyckerhoff (DE) and Freyssinet (FR). These actors have recognised our know-how, and funded around 14 research projects (amounting to over 1.600.000€) or requested our scientific expertise.

I manage a group of, on average, 5 PhD students and have built up a recognised research laboratory for the material concrete and for structural analysis with unique high-performance equipment for Luxembourg.

I am also the coordinator the group “Construction Materials” of the University of the Greater Region. The main objective of this group is to strengthen the scientific excellence of the universities in the Greater Region and their international attractiveness in particular for attracting PhD students in the domain of construction materials.

 

PhD supervision

As a head of the research group for Solid Structures at UL, I have authored and co-authored more than 81 publications in my areas of research and I have supervised about 20 PhD researchers.

Most of my former doctoral candidates are now employed with significant responsibilities in major companies or as postdocs or professors at universities. My experience in supervision has shown me how important it is that PhD candidates get the opportunity to participate in a structured doctoral program within an interdisciplinary and competitive research environment.

Except that all former PhD students have succeeded to engage in important positions in industrial and academic research institutions,our research efforts have been compensated in the last years:

  • In 2012,Patent filed in Luxembourg: “Bloc de construction en béton et système de construction d’un mur avec tels blocs” (together with Chaux de Contern)
  • In 2011,2nd prize of the « Prix interrégional de la recherche » of the Greater Region for the “Développement d’une prothèse de hanche intérimaire spécifique”
  • In 2011, invited member of the executive committee of the Francophone organisation for research and education on concrete(RF2B).
  • “Schretter & Cie Anerkennungspreis”,main prize in Austria for the best doctoral thesis in the domain of material characterisation of concrete, given to Dr.-Ing. Weisheit for the thesis he carried out under my supervision at the University of Luxembourg from 2006-2010
    • In 2007, Best Paper at the 3rd Scottish Conference for Postgraduate researchers (Glasgow)
    • In 2008, Prix René Houpert: award for the best poster - XXVIèmes Rencontres Universitaires de Génie Civil 2008.

I am the head of the research group for Solid Structures which is embedded in the Research Unit in Engineering Science (RUES). The main focus of research is on the analysis of structural elements, the sustainable and economical use of all kinds of resources and the establishment of a centre of expertise for the technological requirements of industrial and public actors. I have over 20 years of teaching experience and 10 years of research practice. I have authored and co-authored more than 80 refereed publications in my area of research. During my academic tenure, I successfully supervised 9 doctoral candidates as main supervisor and 11 PhD candidates as member of the supervision committee.

I research extensively in the combined area of structures and materials, and have instigated many original research projects. Those involved mainly:

  • Structural Health Monitoring,
  • Non-destructive Evaluation and Experimental Mechanics of Structural Components,
  • Structural Analysis and Dynamics,
  • Structural Reliability and Risk Analysis,
  • Analytical and experimental solid mechanics problems with emphasis on structural dynamics,
  • Finite Element Analysis of concrete and steel-concrete composite structures,
  • Failure Analysis for engineering materials and structures.

The performed research projects include investigations on construction materials with emphasis on:

  • Sustainable construction,
  • Short and long term properties of blended cement and concrete,
  • High performance/self-compacting concrete,
  • Steel fiber reinforced concrete,
  • Development of materials out of industrial wastes for structural applications,
  • Strengthening and retrofitting of structures,
  • Composite construction in steel, timber and concrete,
  • Bond in composite construction,
  • Life cycle analysis of materials and structures,
  • Non-destructive testing methods (NDT).

My research is supplemented by strong collaboration with industries, government and private organisations. I have been involved as a consultant in interesting and challenging projects which include:

  • Design/quality control of building structures by in situ loading tests (Administration des Bâtiments Publics, Ville de Luxembourg, ArcelorMittal)
  • Design/quality control of bridges, (Administration des Ponts et Chaussées Luxembourg)
  • Development of insulating masonry blocks (Chaux de Contern S.A.)
  • Determination of the acoustic performances of a lightweight concrete realised on the basis of wood-chip aggregates (Eifelhaus S.A.)
  • Optimisation of the formulation of a wood-chip concrete in order to balance the insulation and mechanical performances (Eifelhaus S.A.)
  • Rheological analysis of mortar in order to characterise the compatibility of the binder and the additives (Cimalux, S.A.)
  • Analysis of the crack development of a fair-faced replacement screed (Dyckerhoff, Buzzi-Unicem, Germany, Italy)
  • Analysis of the strength development of a grouting mortar for pre-stressed systems (Freyssinet, France)
  • Development of a double-leaf masonry wall system (Chaux de Contern, S.A.)

I actively stepped out of my main research area into interdisciplinary projects by applying the acquired expertise in fields like the investigation of the mechanical behaviour of standardised, endoskeleton-including hip spacers implanted into composite femurs, or the analysis of the rotation capacity of knees, allowing also publications in medical journals

All of my projects are co-financed by industry and thus contribute to promote the young University of Luxembourg, thereby helping to integrate this new institution within the society of Luxembourg.
